Leaders Redefine Entrepreneurship
Leadership is a blend of several qualities; it’s a role that demands multi-tasking. That’s exactly what a successful entrepreneur does. As Kaushal Sampat, COO, Dun & Bradstreet India says, “The very nature of the role requires the entrepreneur to don many functional hats-she or he is a finance, marketing, sales, operations professional all rolled into one. But the most important role of an entrepreneur is that of an HR leader – the ability to make his team see a big dream and stick with her / him through some very tough times.” “Our research on leadership factors that spell success has thrown up the ability to motivate a team, to work well across cultures and to be able to facilitate change as the top three factors that are a must have,” adds Rajiv Krishnan, MD-Development Dimensions International(India).
If entrepreneurship is about utilizing a market opportunity to create a business, leadership is about building the right team and getting it involved in achieving the business goals. Besides business acumen and competence, an entrepreneurial leader also needs other characteristics like integrity, dedication and determination to persevere against all odds. A good leader is able to take his team along with him; it is not so much about people management as it is about understanding people and inspiring them.
Organisational structures are necessary to facilitate smooth operations. But they are good enough only as long as they work as enablers and not become impediments. Good leaders understand this and also recognize the importance of providing a healthy work environment where employees can express their view and ideas irrespective o their position in the organizational structure. Good leaders are good listeners who pay attention to what their employees say. “It is important to create an environment where anyone can come forward with an idea on how to improve any aspect of the business,” says Tom Nies, CEO, Cincom. Mr.Nies, who has been described as ‘the epitome of the entrepreneurial spirit of American business’ by the 40th US President Ronald Reagan, practices what he says. One of his staff members came up with the idea of creating a call centre business in order to reduce the cot of customer service. Although the idea was contray to Cincom’s background, Mr Nies saw sense in it. He supported it by travelling to India to promote its opening. “If the idea is good, and the benefits and risks are clearly stated, it should get the green light – and the support it merits, “he remarks. Indeed, the ability to listen can make a difference. It is said that Sir Richard Branson, another legendary entrepreneur, always carries a notebook (the good old stationery product and not the laptop) with him. The purpose is to note down any good idea that may come up while chatting with his people. After all, great ideas do not necessarily come up only at board meetings.
It is rather easy to be a leader when things are going smooth; a leader’s true abilities are actually tested in the times of crisis. That’s when entrepreneurs need to hang on to their dreams and also convince the team to hang on. “We faced a tough time after the dot com crash. It took courage and determination to stick to my belief that Internet advertising would still be big. It took leadership to explain this to the team and keep building while many said advertising on the Internet would never generate any revenue,” recalls Roy de Souza, CEO of Zedo, an ad-serving company. Zedo survived the dot com crash and has emerged as the world’s third-largest firm in its industry. Having a fighting spirit is really essential in today’s competitive world. As Nikhil Shah, Executive Director, Elbee Express Pvt Ltd, remarks, “Being an entrepreneur today is synonymous with the ability to take risks and being resilient in the face of all obstacles.”
Employee retention is another critical aspect where leadership plays an important role. A poor leader can be a key reason for attrition. However, many times, there are certain external factors that cause employees to leave. It is situations like this that organisations and leaders need to handle sensitively and show some farsightedness. Ramanujam Sridhar, CEO, Brand-Comm offers an insightful perspective in this context. He says, “Our philosophy is very simple. Any employee who is leaving could end up as our client and that thinking ensures that we treat our people who are leaving, extremely well, however difficult it may be.” No wonder, many employees of this firm have returned.
An organisation is usually led by one competent person at the helm but takes many talented and dedicated people at various levels to run it. The leader must ensure that his organization has such people placed at the right positions. It is also the leader’s responsibility to create the second line of command who can take charge of things when required. “A successful leader is the one who breeds an army of mini-leaders who can carry on the legacy of successful entrepreneurship,” says Dharti Desai, Founder and CEO, Finewinesmore. These mini-leaders would have to be identified at the right time and then groomed to take up greater responsibilities. In this context, Monica Doshi, MD, Leadership Management India Pvt. Ltd rightly says that the focus for all entrepreneurs and owners is going to be grooming and on-the-job training. “Strategic motivation and determination can be the keys to develop and lead a successful team and nurture talent by creating a healthy learning atmosphere,” adds Kochouseph Chittilappilly, MD, V-Guard Industries Ltd.
Indeed, there are many facets to leadership. A True leader can redefine his entrepreneurial aspirations and lead his organisation to greater heights if he can inspire his people to dream, dare, learn and work along with him.

Our Director visited ING VYSA BANK and made a presentation about a proposal to offer PGDM program with Bank Management specialization. The presentation was well received by the senior officials in the Bank. The following is the brief summary of the presentation.
PGDM CUSTOMIZED PROGRAM FOR BANKING SECTOR
NHLI proposes to introduce an industry centric PGDM program for banking sector.
Under this unique partnership initiative, we invite the patron organization’s senior executives to be on the advisory council of the institute, nominate members to the board of studies- the statutory body of the institute which frames the syllabus, course regulations, academic schedules, selection criteria for admissions.
The program will be customized to suit the participating/ partnering company needs. All the field work, assignments, corporate exposure training and project dissertation will be oriented to the company related concerns and issues. The students spend more than 20 percent of their time in the first three trimesters with the company.
In the second year, one specialization electives will be selected by the company and the students selected by the company will study those electives. The students will be spending another 12 weeks at the company during the fifth trimester under project dissertation study which is an industry based in-depth study. The company may specify the topic which will be useful and provides vital inputs for corporate decision making.
After all this training, the company will have a team of students who are ready to work from day one without any training.
We believe this to be win-win strategy for the institution and the company. The obvious reasons are the students will be trained as per company needs while they are studying. The training costs are shifted to the academic institute and the company will have the ready made managers at the end of the program.
For the institute there are many advantages, the course design and training support are available from the company, students and faculty members will have access to company environment. All learning and training gets focused at live case studies and learning situations. The more tangible benefit is placement of all the students which will bring laurels to the institute.

Keeping these advantages in mind we have initiated this unique industry institute partnership management education and we request you to support us in preparing ready made managers.

PGDM CUSTOMIZED PROGRAM FOR BANKING SECTOR
NHLI proposes to introduce an industry centric PGDM program for banking sector.
Option II
SKILL UPGRADATION PROGRAM IN MANAGEMENT LEADING TO THE AWARD OF PGDM – AN AICTE APPROVED POST GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MANAGEMENT EQUIVALENT TO MBA FOR WORKING YOUNG GRADUATES UNDER PARALLEL LEARNING MODE
We propose to offer our PGDM PROGRAM UNDER parallel learning mode in which the students will be studying while they work. We will schedule classes to suit the timings of students and the company may have to sponsor the students.
Classes at the places of work:
The professors visit the company and take classes in the late afternoons/evenings and on week ends.
The students will be provided with reading material in print mode and soft versions as per the syllabus.
More learning in the companies:
They can take up all field assignments, in company training Corporate Exposure Training, Project Dissertation etc. in the same company where they are working.
Company Driven Specialization: The company could suggest inclusion of a maximum of four courses in the second elective and could even train the students on campus or the institute will arrange training in the desired courses, evaluate and grant diploma with that specialization. This will bring down the training time at the company.
Online Examinations: The students can take online examinations for all internal assessment tests. The Term examinations will be conducted at the company by the institute faculty.
The advantages to the company:
The company would be assured of a minimum service by the student for the period of study and may also take commitment for another two or three years if the student is provided financial support by the company.
The program enables the student to take up next level managerial responsibilities with greater ease and efficiency.

Keeping these advantages in mind we have initiated this unique industry institute partnership management education and we request you to support us in preparing ready made managers.
For years we have talked much about industry institute partnership we wish to take initiative from institute side and assure that every thing you need will be included in the training program and we solicit your reciprocation.

Coprorate Entrepreneurship
CORPORATE ENTREPRENEURSHIP
“Corporate Entrepreneurship also known as Intrapreneurship is an organizational initiative to enhance innovative abilities of their employees”
CE is a process whereby an individual or a group of individuals, in association with an existing organization, create a new organization or initiate renewal of innovation within that organization.
Why corporate entrepreneurship:
From HR side:
A measure to retain well nurtured talent within the organizational talent
Remove the glass ceiling of personal growth
You can have a cake and eat it too situation
Business related benefits:
1.Cost related advantages to the business derived from outsourcing
Several fixed investments and costs will be shifted out of the organization in the process of a strategic outsourcing of processes
2. To be able to tap the internal energies and creativity :
This domain will be open to the internal entrepreneurs- the entrepreneurs within the organizations
3. This is a win-win situation to all
The company-
(i) is able to retain extraordinary and exemplary managerial talent within the orbit of the organization as they are still with the organization and doing what otherwise they are doing
(ii) Off- load the processes which could be outsourced and reduce costs to a considerable extent
(iii)In some cases derive the benefits of small enterprises- several incentives, concessions and benefits available to small enterprises
(iv) More resources to focus on core competencies as the out sourcable processes get outsourced to the Intrapreneurs
(v) Shifting threats of disruptive technologies or changes in external environment
Insulating the business from the threat of failure or the image related issues if the new product fails in the market.
This is seen in entertainment business particularly in film business- well known film companies/directors will not be doing totally new or off-beat films on the main banner instead they encourage their assistant directors/ co-producers financiers, distributors to try-out the new experiments and support the new ventures.
“The entrepreneur should not create clouds of overconfidence which blurs the realities and lead to failures which are deliberate”
Conditions that favor the blossoming of corporate entrepreneurship:
The dynamic and highly competitive business environment which demands constant innovations and ability to adapt to change
Creation and maintenance of conducive atmosphere by top management-
HR policies and practices
Physical facilities for experimentation
Incentives for innovation
Integrating intrapreneurship with career growth in organizations
Right training and development facilities
Incubation facilities for innovation
Role of B-Schools:
The roots of this lie in educational institutions particularly management institutions-
The B-Schools to inculcate the culture of making job creators rather than job seekers
Make Entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship as a vital under current in the learning process by -
(i) designing core courses and specialization courses
(ii) Facilitating continuous interaction with successful entrepreneurs
(iii)Facilitate incubation centres
(iv)Networking with external support agencies
(v) Initiate steps to partner with leading companies and organizations which are promoting entrepreneurship development
There is lot of funding available from agencies like Department of Science and Technology and host of other government and non-government organizations
The present day business environment is highly conducive for entrepreneurship and intrapreneurial initiatives
Make best use of your two year training to be ready to become entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs.
All the best
